Updated GWM P500 goes dark with new blacked-out details

The GWM P500 is undoubtedly one of the most appealing bakkies to emerge from the East. Its design even gives off a hint of American influence, and honestly, it works. Big bakkies have always been a hit in Mzansi, and the P500 fits right into that tradition while standing out in its way.

Launched in SA just a year ago, the P500 is already receiving what GWM regards as a model year update (MY25.5). It might seem early, but anyone familiar with Chinese manufacturers knows they’re quick to tweak and refine their products. So, what’s new? The standout feature is a bolder, more aggressive look thanks to blacked-out exterior details; the grille, roof rails, styling bar, and side mirrors all get the dark treatment. While the ‘Black Edition’ isn’t exactly new, it’s a clever touch for anyone who prefers a sleek, understated finish over the usual shiny bits.

Measuring 5,445mm in length and nearly 2 metres in width, the P500 is not just one of the largest bakkies on the market, it’s also one of the heaviest, tipping the scales at 2,575kg. When it comes to towing, it keeps pace with its competitors at 3,500kg. Add to that a host of practical features: an electric rear sliding window, a split-opening tailgate, 28 loadbox anchor points, and a loadbox lamp, and you’ve got a bakkie that’s as functional as it is imposing.

Step inside, and the interior continues to impress and is pretty much the same as the old models. You still get that upmarket feel with black Nappa leather trim, electric, heated, ventilated, and even massaging front seats, plus power-adjustable heated and cooled rear seats. Depending on the trim, you can get a 12.3-inch or 14.6-inch infotainment screen, complemented by a 10-speaker Harman Infinity audio system, front and rear wireless charging, and a panoramic roof.

Underneath, the P500 gives buyers a choice of two powertrains. The 2.0-litre HEV is SA’s first full hybrid bakkie, churning out 255kW and 648Nm, while the 2.4-litre turbo diesel serves up 135kW and 480Nm. Both engines work through a smooth 9-speed automatic gearbox and come with a capable 4x4 system for those off-road excursions.

Pricing for the P500 starts at R799,900 for the Luxury version, R889,900 for the mid-range Super Luxury, and R999,900 for the range-topping Ultra Luxury hybrid variant. The entire P500 lineup comes with a 7-year/200,000km warranty, an 8-year/150,000km high-voltage battery warranty for the hybrid, 7-year unlimited km roadside assistance, and a 7-year/75,000km service plan.

The GWM P500 is a compelling option for anyone looking for a bakkie that stands apart from the usual big-name players. It’s well-built, practical, and packed with features that make it truly stand out. All in all, the blacked-out elements elevate an already stunning vehicle into something that demands a second look every time you park it.
