New Defender Trophy Edition revives the spirit of adventure

The Land Rover Defender has always been an adventure-ready vehicle, earning a reputation by tackling some of the world’s most unforgiving terrains. Built with ruggedness in mind, it quickly became the vehicle of choice for explorers, adventurers, and overlanders.

One of its most iconic moments came during the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition between 1955 and 1956 – a nearly 30,000-kilometre journey from London to Singapore in Series I Land Rovers. It also played a central role in the Camel Trophy competition from 1980 to 2000, which saw participants traverse tough environments like Borneo, the Amazon, and Mongolia.

Now Land Rover is reviving that adventurous spirit with the launch of the new Defender 110 Trophy Edition. The special model celebrates the Defender’s legacy in global off-road competitions and arrives alongside the introduction of the Defender Trophy Competition – a modern-day, adventure-focused event inspired by those legendary off-road trials of the past.

Speaking of the Trophy Edition, it comes in two exclusive exterior shades, Deep Sandglow Yellow and Keswick Green, both of which pay homage to the classic Defenders used on past international Trophy-style competitions. For added durability and a rugged look, the two body shades can be finished with optional Matte Protective Film. To complete the bold aesthetic, the special edition also features gloss black accents on the bonnet, lower body cladding, brake callipers, and rear recovery points.

It sits on new gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber, as well as a dark scuff plate and gloss black wheel arch protection, further complemented by a black front undershield. To showcase its unique status within the Defender stable, there are Trophy decals on the bonnet and at the back.

The interior gets Trophy illuminated tread plates, Ebony Windsor furnishings, an exposed crossbar colour-matched to the exterior, finished with unique laser-etched end caps. As standard, the Trophy Edition comes with a roof rack, a black deployable roof ladder, front and rear mud flaps, a gloss black side-mounted gear carrier for additional space, and a raised air intake.

As for the competition itself, participants will face a series of carefully designed obstacles, along with mental and physical challenges that test not just driving skill, but also wit, willpower, and teamwork. Applications are now open, with entries closing on 31 July 2025.

Priced at R2,227,800, the Land Rover Defender Trophy Edition marks a significant moment for the brand and one that speaks directly to its roots in adventure and off-road greatness. It’s a welcome return to form, and frankly, long overdue for a name so deeply tied to adventure. As for the Defender Trophy Competition, it’s the perfect cherry on top and a superb way to showcase the Defender’s capabilities.
