Toyota fortifies its Hilux and Fortuner models with hybrid powertrains

In recent months, Toyota has been exploring the possibility of developing a hybrid version of the Hilux as it pushes towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Some may recall the Hilux GR-S concept, a mild-hybrid vehicle that was unveiled in Kenya during the 2023 World Rally Championship, with little information available pertaining to the model.

The good news is that the hybridised Hilux is finally being introduced to the local market, and as is often the case, where the Hilux goes, the Fortuner follows. Both models still employ the same 2.8-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine with 150kW and 500Nm of torque, but with the addition of a 48-volt hybrid system that, according to Toyota, has been designed specially for the Hilux and Fortuner models.

The hybrid technology makes use of a new 48-volt battery that recharges through the process of regenerative braking. The pack weighs only 7.6kg and powers the vehicle's 12-volt system with a new DC/DC converter.

When fully charged, the battery sends up to 12kW of power and 65Nm of torque through the motor generator to the engine for improved acceleration, power, and efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, Toyota says that the hybrid system improves that by up to 5% compared to its conventional non-electrified diesel counterparts. In real-world driving conditions, this will be a significant improvement considering the relatively higher fuel consumption of the regular Hiluxes and Fortuner models we have tested.

As it stands right now, the hybrid is exclusively available in the double cab Hilux variant and selected Fortuner models.

Aesthetically, everything has been carried over from the regular model, with Toyota mentioning that it has paid special attention to ensuring the Hilux and Fortuner 48V possess formidable water-crossing capabilities of up to 700mm deep, thanks to the waterproofing of the battery and DC-DC converter.

With the hybrid system in place, the duo makes a stronger case for themselves, not only as capable and robust models but also as efficient vehicles that can adapt to changing environmental standards.
