The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class bridges the gap between the E-Class and S-Class model range and while it might not be the oldest model in the three-pointed star’s line-up, over 450 000 units were sold since the inception of the original CLS in 2004.

Now in its third generation, Mercedes-Benz is introducing a refreshed model that spawns a sharper look and updated tech.

Mercedes-Benz offers the refreshed CLS in two trim levels; Avantgarde and AMG Line.

The entry-level Avantgarde model is now fitted with a new front apron that incorporates larger air intakes, two louvres at the side as well as a front splitter finished in silver chrome.

Both trims get a new grille with the now-familiar 3D star pattern with chrome-gloss surfaces plus high-gloss black louvre with chrome inlay.

At the back, the refreshed CLS boasts a black faux-diffuser insert plus a silver-chrome trim strip. Buyers can opt for two new wheel designs of the 19-inch alloy wheels.

The AMG Line models are fitted with an AMG-specific front apron with a black A-wing, silver-chrome front splitter, air intakes with vertical bars and aerodynamically shaped flics in high-gloss black.

Mercedes-Benz further improved the look of the CLS AMG Line with the addition of an AMG sill trim on the side and spoiler lip. It rides on 20-inch alloy wheels that can be had in two colours; tremolite grey and high-gloss black.

The cabin is bolstered with two new trim finishes including the centre console, which are available in open-pore brown walnut and high-gloss grey wood.

The range of leather seat upholstery has also been expanded: Neva grey/magma grey and sienna brown/black are the two new colour combinations here.

As part of the update, the CLS receives a redesigned multifunction steering wheel in Nappa leather. The spokes are finished in high-gloss black with silver chrome edging, the paddle shifters in silver chrome.

Reports state that only two derivatives will be on offer in Mzansi; CLS400d and the Mercedes-AMG CLS53.

Under the hood of the CLS400d lies a 2.9-litre inline-six turbocharged diesel engine with 250 kW and 700 Nm. The CLS53 4Matic uses a hybridized six-cylinder petrol engine with 320 kW and 520 Nm and augmented by an EQ starter motor with 16 kW and 250 Nm.

The updated CLS range will be introduced in the second half of the year in Mzansi
