VW Golf R 20–Year Edition is brand’s most potent Golf ever
It’s been 20 years since the first Volkswagen Mk4 Golf R32 rolled off the production line to challenge some serious rivals of that time and it remains a cult classic even today.
The Mk6 iteration saw VW ditching the ‘32’ designation for the ‘R’ tag which has since become something easier to adapt to if we’re honest. It has remained like that with the next Golf R models.
Golf R potency
Now in its 8th generation, Volkswagen is celebrating 20 years of R with the introduction of the Golf R 20-Year Edition which comes with a host of standard technology and equipment. Off the bat, the Volkswagen Golf 8 R 20 Years Edition uses a 2.0-litre TSI engine with raised power outputs of 245 kW compared to the standard car’s 234 kW thus making it the most potent Golf to ever been built by VW.

On the outside, the Golf 8 R 20 Years Edition is kitted with the R-Performance pack which by default adds a rear spoiler on the roof, R-Performance Torque Vectoring plus Special and Drift settings for some sideways fun.
There are R insignias on the grille, fenders and back. It sits on a set of 19” wheels in two-tone black and blue shade combination. In case buyers want a different colour, these items can be coated in black.
Special interior
Saddling inside, the special edition is equipped with sports seats that boast Nappa leather upholstery plus blue R logo insignias imprinted on the backrest. The carbon fibre trim on the dash and door panels round off the tweaks inside. Another special feature includes an Emotion Start option which when activated, revs the Golf R to 2,500 r/min on startup for a more imposing cacophony.
Volkswagen says the Golf 8 R 20 Years Editon will be sold in Europe, North America and other markets this year until the middle of 2023. The standard Golf 8 R is slated to arrive in SA before the end of the year.
