The Xiaomi SUV7 Ultra is now the fastest EV around the Nurburgring

The high-performance Xiaomi SU7 Ultra made a significant impression even before it officially went into production. As a prototype, it managed to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a blistering 6:46.87 in 2024, which is seriously quick by any standard.

Sure, it didn’t make it into the record books since it wasn’t a production-spec car, but that alone was enough to show just how much potential it packed. Interestingly, that run was more of a warm-up for the brand. What Xiaomi Auto did was to use it as a learning experience before going back to the drawing board, reassessing things, making the right tweaks, and then returning to the legendary circuit, but this time around, in a production model.

Though slower than what was achieved by the prototype, the production SU7 Ultra went around the 20.8-kilometre circuit in 7:04.957 minutes, narrowly beating the record previously held by the Rimac Nevera (7:05:298) by a good 0.3 seconds. Fitted with the optional track package, the 2,360kg sports sedan packs a tri-motor powertrain with a combined 1,138kW, which enables it to accelerate silently from 0-100km/h in 1.9 seconds and push its top speed beyond 350km/h.

Even though it’ll probably be a while before most high-performance EVs come close to beating that lap time, it’s still not quite at the level of the current overall production car king, the Mercedes-AMG One, which clocked an insane time of 6:29.090 minutes.

It feels like only a matter of time before Rimac fires back and reclaims the title. And if you read between the lines of what Rimac CTO Emilio Scervo said – that "the simplest way to show what the Nevera is truly capable of is to go out and break records" – you can tell that the Croatian marque isn’t done yet.

As for Xiaomi Auto, the brand has entered into a deep cooperation with the Nürburgring circuit, and it’s now part of the circuit’s exclusive test and development programme. That means it will be using the Green Hell not just for hot laps, but as a serious proving ground to fine-tune its EV tech.

It’s an exciting move, and it's more than likely that Xiaomi is gearing up to bring something special to the track…
