Stellantis unveils STLA Large Platform: A big leap to electrification

As part of Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, the automotive manufacturing corporation has unveiled its new STLA Large BEV-native platform that will underpin a range of upcoming vehicles in the D and E segments.

The SLTA Large Platform is one of four global platforms as the brand transitions towards electrification.

Just so you know, the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan includes expanding the brand's manufacturing footprint by establishing a manufacturing plant in SA, which will undoubtedly help boost sales in the country.

Speaking of the STLA Large Platform, Stellantis says that it will enable several segment-leading capabilities, including embedded energy, charging efficiency, high-performance vehicle dynamics, and trail-rated off-road driving.

Stellantis aims to build eight vehicles underpinned by the new platform between the years 2024 and 2026. Initially, the brand will use the platform on Dodge and Jeep models for the North American market, followed by Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, and Maserati. A great move, indeed.

The SLTA Large Platform will also be installed in several plants in Europe and North America and will be available in multi-energy cars, including hybrid and internal combustion.

In addition, the STLA Large platform is designed with inherent flexibility, allowing for adjustments in wheelbase, overall length, width, and height. This adaptability enables it to accommodate a variety of vehicle types, from family-oriented and high-performance vehicles to luxury cars and capable off-road 4x4s.

According to Stellantis, the STLA Large platform accepts drivetrain enhancements such as limited-slip differentials or wheel-end disconnects for better performance and efficiency. What stands out, though, is the fact that it will have the potential to carry extreme power that will outperform any of the existing Hellcat V8s.

Regarding the SLTA Large Platform’s metrics, it has an overall length range of 5,126mm, an overall width range of 2,030mm, a wheelbase range of 3,075mm, a ground clearance range of 288mm, and a tyre diameter of 858mm.

When it comes to electrification, the SLTA Large Platform will initially include battery pack options with energy ratings between 86kWh and 118kWh. Stellantis says it targets an overall range of 800km for sedans, which, considering the current landscape of electric vehicles in SA, is anticipated to be a valuable and welcomed addition to curb range anxiety.

On the performance front, Stellantis promises a 2-second range sprint from 0-100km/h while a fast charger will add up to 4.5kWh per minute to the 800-volt battery pack.

As Stellanti prepares for electrification, it is investing more than €50 billion over the next decade on the targets of reaching a 100% passenger car BEV sales mix in Europe and a 50% passenger car and light-duty truck BEV sales mix in the United States by 2030.

The brand plans to have 48 BEVs on the market by 2024 and is on track to become a carbon-net-zero corporation by 2038.
