Porsche Mission X sets its sights on all-out supremacy over the Mercedes-AMG One

An electric hypercar that is faster than a Rimac Nevera and looks better?

This is Porsche’s latest hypercar, the all-electric Porsche Mission X is being revealed today at the 75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars exhibition in Stuttgart, Germany’. It is one the most show-stopping designs we’ve seen in a while but it’s technical vision is even more spectacular.

Let’s get straight to it. The Mission X has been realised as a concept of sustainability and performance with a mission(yes) to be the fastest vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife,  with a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio and downforce values well in excess of those produced by a current 911 GT3 RS. That’s insane – but that’s not all. The other concept goal is to offer better charging of its 900-volt system and half the charging time of the Taycan Turbo S. These are the goals, but Porsche wouldn’t set these goals and then reveal a concept car that never quite gets there. We’ve seen them do it before and we speculate that they’ll do this again, especially with ties to Rimac and its Nevera technology.

Since we’re speculating, we expect that the Mission X will be lighter than the Nevera with more track-focused dynamics. 1,500 bhp and 1,500 kg would be magic for an all-electric vehicle and we’ll second TopGear UK’s guess. Then expect acceleration times of 2 or less seconds and a top end that is…pick a number over 330 km/h. The battery layout is innovative too, said to be located behind the cabin as opposed to underneath the floor as with most electric cars these days.

To claim a Nürburgring record yet again, Porsche will need to oust the current record holder which is none other than the Mercedes-AMG One that conquered the 'Ring in 6min35secs. Grab the popcorn for this one.

The Porsche Mission X may look small…and we’ll talk about the looks just now but it is 4.5 m long and 2 m wide. That is Porsche 918 Spyder and Carrera GT size. It is a stunning concept if these images are anything to go by. Finished in a colour that Porsche has called Rocket Metallic, it blends a jet-fighter roof dome with Le Mans-style doors like those found on the 917 race car; and exposed carbon-weave worked into the metal. Vertical lights at the front that ‘blink’ and probably have some aero impact too.  At the rear, the 3D P-O-R-S-C-H-E lettering is entirely lit following the light strips on either side. Porsche has added the touch of a pulsating letter E when the Mission X is being charged. The new Porsche crest also makes its debut on the Mission X, and this is a powerful way to usher in this modernised logo.

The Mission X is a stunner, revealed in a very important year and on a very specific day in the Porsche story. 75 years ago, on the 8th of June 1948, the first 356 Roadster was officially recognised as a fully operational vehicle named Porsche. It was the beginning of the Porsche brand.

The Mission X, though Porsche claims it to be a concept, is seemingly a pre-cursor to what the next Porsche iconic hypercar will be. It is the culmination of Porsche dreaming of what its future could and should be…and we absolutely love it.

Happy 75th Porsche!
