Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic+: Efficiency meets performance
Bearing the W214 codename and equipped with a bevy of new technology, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class was unveiled in 2023 as a replacement for the W213 model that was introduced in 2016.
When it debuted, reports stated that the local range would only consist of a hybridised E200, an E200d, and the stonking E63 S models. While it remains to be seen if this will be the case, the Stuttgart-based carmaker has now revealed its E53 hybrid 4Matic+ which is available in two configurations: sedan and estate.
Given the specific market dynamics of South Africa, it is unlikely that the latter model will be included in the local range.
That aside. The Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic+ makes use of a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine that is paired with a plug-in hybrid 120kW motor system, providing a total peak power of 450kW and 750Nm of torque. When it comes to performance, it sprints from rest to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds before hitting the limiter at 280km/h or 140km/h in EV mode. It shifts through a 9-speed automatic transmission.
The electric motor is powered by a 28.6kWh battery pack. The pack can be recharged using an 11kW AC onboard charger as well as via a 60kW DC fast-charger, which allows the battery to be recharged from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes. As for the EV mode, it has an electric range of up to 100km, which should be ideal in city driving situations.
To differentiate it from its stablemates, the E53, in AMG fashion, gets an AMG-specific radiator grille with illuminated vertical slats as standard, wider front fenders, an independent AMG front apron, LED taillights, an AMG spoiler lip on the trunk lid, a diffuser, and two round double tailpipe trims on the left and right.
To convey its electrified nature, there are hybrid-specific badges on the front fenders and rear. A set of 19-inch light-alloy wheels is offered as standard, while a 20-inch and 21-inch set can be had as options.
The Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic exists to give us a preview of the comprehensive capabilities expected from the full-blown AMG E63 S. Despite not being a fully-fledged AMG product, it continues to hold a crucial position within the Mercedes-Benz lineup, even amidst a competitive and diminishing performance segment.
