Mazda 3 Handed a Subtle Refresh

The current generation Mazda 3 that was introduced in Mzansi in 2019 has always been unique in its own approach, yet it was met with criticism from the onset.

For starters, the Mazda 3 came with naturally-aspirated engines that could have used more power, which is always a weakness for any NA powerplant, especially in the thin air of Gauteng. But it makes up for it with a smooth and quiet ride, attributes that buyers in the premium hatchback segment often look for.

For the 2023 model year, the Japanese marque is giving its hatchback a subtle refresh to keep it relevant in its segment, but it’s more of a tech refresh than outright exterior cosmetics.

That said, the new Mazda 3 adds a new colour, Ceramic White, to the existing colour palette.

Sold in three variants: Dynamic Manual, Dynamic Auto, and range-topping Astina Auto, both models come standard with a host of niceties such as an 8-inch display screen, a 7-inch TFT LCD Digital Meter, cruise control, rear parking sensors, a head-up display, LED headlights, and an electronic parking brake with auto hold, among others.

The refresh also adds Android Auto and Wireless Apple CarPlay, a USB Type-C port, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

The flagship Astina adds 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, a sunroof, rear air vents, a blind spot monitoring system, paddle shifters, and black interior leather or optional red.

Unfortunately, the naturally-aspirated engines continue to power the range. There’s a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder in two states of tune as well as a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder that powers the flagship model.

The 6-speed manual Dynamic produces 88kW and 153Nm, while the mid-range Dynamic, which uses a 6-speed automatic gearbox, produces 82kW and 146Nm sent to the front wheels.

The range-topping Astina’s 2.0-litre engine delivers 121kW and 213Nm like the outgoing model. This engine is also paired with a sole 6-speed automatic transmission that sends all the power to the front axle.

Looking past its drawbacks, the Mazda 3 makes for a superb family hatchback option, thanks to its well-built cabin, generous amounts of features, and overall impressive driving manners.
