Manhart SL 700 R limited: Monster Mercedes

For many, the AMG badge is the pinnacle of performance from the German manufacturer, and Brabus is the brand for those more attuned with the over-the-top performance potential of Merc.

But there is another, which goes by the name of Manhart. As a brand specialising in enhancing AMG models' performance alongside other German manufacturers, Manhart creates masterpieces that enthusiasts drool over. The latest is the SL 700 R.

Although it may resemble the familiar SL AMG, this model is not to be underestimated. Based on the latest SL 63 from Mercedes, Manhart produced an almost unfathomable product.

To even begin to understand the creation for which Manhart is responsible, we need to take a look at the standard SL 63 4Matic+. This car is already impressive, boasting a 4.0-litre bi-turbocharged V8 engine that delivers 430 kW of power and 800 Nm of torque. It can reach 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, which is already more than impressive. But the technicians at Manhart wanted to wring more out of it.

To meet the desired power numbers, an array of hardware and software elements needed to be improved. These include a new intercooler, air intake and MHtronik Powerbox. These modifications allow for a new output at 520 kW and 935 Nm. A Manhart-modified AMG Speedshift MCT 9-speed gearbox sends drive to the wheels.

Due to the lack of TÜV approval (Technischer Überwachungsverein essentially does component certification) for these additions, Manhart will include a selection of extra components as options for exported vehicles. These include OPF sports downpipes with 600-cell catalytic converters.

For the purists, the original body remains standard with the Manhart gold and black paintwork. The wheels, however, are from the mbDESIGN Manhart range.

Manhart upholds a level of personalisation and allows the customer to have a say during the manufacturing process of their bespoke vehicle. As the name of this car is the SL 700 R Limited, only 10 of these rockets will be produced.

The SL is an icon in the Merc lineup, and to see the car in mostly stock form with a monster of an engine is exciting. Especially as the V8 is heading towards extinction. At least we still get to see the best of what these manufacturers offer before the automotive world turns fully electric.
