Land Rover Discovery range bolstered with special edition models

While it’s often overshadowed by heavy-hitters like the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, and Isuzu mu-X, the truth of the matter is that the Land Rover Discovery nails the 7-seater game. And not just in terms of space, it’s got serious off-road ability to go pretty much anywhere you want.

What sets it apart, though, is the cabin. It’s the most premium in this group by far, practical, spacious, and just feels a cut above the rest. That said, the British manufacturer is increasing its appeal with the introduction of the refreshed Dynamic S and two new editions.

Starting with the Dynamic S model, it comes fitted with gloss black lower body sides, gloss black grille, wheel arches, lower bumpers, and front claw detailing, while the interior adds a digital instrument cluster, paddle shifters, and an 11.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard.

The Landmark variant, on the other hand, has been created as a nod to the Discovery’s 35-year legacy as a go-anywhere family adventure SUV. One of the standout touches is the mountain range logo, which serves as a tribute to the original Discovery from 1989, which you’ll spot on the aluminium treadplates and even projected onto the ground when you unlock the car.

Building on the above-mentioned features of the Dynamic S, it’s all about comfort and convenience in the Metropolitan variant. For example, the second-row seats can slide and recline, there’s a massive panoramic roof, and you get a full surround-view camera setup. Rear passengers are also looked after with Land Rover’s Click & Go media holders – clever attachments that clip onto the front headrests to securely hold tablets or iPads. Perfect for keeping the kids entertained on those long road trips.

Sitting at the top of the range is the Metropolitan version, which leans heavily into the luxury side of the Discovery lineup. It stands out with distinctive touches like the Atlas Silver Discovery badging on the bonnet and boot, along with front and rear undershields finished in sleek Indus Silver. There’s also a unique front grille featuring a silver foil insert, Metropolitan-branded treadplates, and a set of stylish 20-inch diamond-turned multi-spoke alloys. And if you're into a stealthier look, you can opt to have those wheels finished in gloss black – a small detail if we’re honest, but one that adds serious curb appeal.

The interior gets Windsor Leather with 14-way electrically adjustable heated and cooled seats, a 650-watt 14-speaker Meridian sound system, a clear-sight rear view mirror, Cabin Air Purification Plus, and a range of extra comfort and convenience features.

Powering the range are three powertrain options: D200 and a P300e plug-in hybrid for the special edition, and a D350 for the Dynamic model. The D200 packs a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 147kW and 430Nm plus a 9-speed automatic transmission. The P300e combines a smaller 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbopetrol engine plus a hybrid system. The combined power output is rated at 227 kW and 540Nm. Unlike the aforementioned, this unit uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. Land Rover claims this unit can cruise on battery power alone for up to 61km – ideal for short daily commutes.

The D350, on the other hand, features a 3.0-litre turbodiesel 6-cylinder engine with 257kW and a hefty 700Nm, plus an 8-speed automatic gearbox. This engine is shared with certain Range Rover models and has proven to be both capable and surprisingly efficient.

When it comes to pricing, the Discovery range is priced from R1,362,900 and up to R1,825,600 for the range-topping Metropolitan fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. With these latest additions, the Land Rover Discovery has become even more compelling, blending refinement, performance, and versatility. If we had to pick, the D350 stands out as the most well-rounded option. It doesn’t come cheap, but if the price tag doesn’t deter you and make you look at the competition, it’s worth every cent.
