Lamborghini Urus Performante: The new king of super SUVs?

The hyper SUV fold has been hyped significantly since the initial arrival of the Lamborghini Urus four years ago.

Yes, automakers such as Aston Martin and Porsche have lately been at the pinnacle of the class with the no-nonsense bullish DBX 707 with its 405 kW and 700 Nm plus the 471 kW/ 850 Nm-wielding Cayenne Turbo GT, further giving the Lamborghini Urus a run for its money.

Instead of Lamborghini responding to the call with an all-new model, it's introduced a beefed-up Urus model donning the Performante nameplate. As a reminder, this is the same super SUV that set a new record in the production SUV category on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Road after crossing the finish line at 4,302 m in 10:32 minutes.

It beat the time of 10:49 set by the Bentley Bentayga in 2018.

First things first. The Lamborghini Urus Performance is still powered by the same twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine that's been tinkered with to spew a total of 490 kW, up from 478 kW. The torque remains unchanged at 850 Nm.

Lamborghini has also reduced the overall weight of the Urus Performante by 47 kg and that helps the SUV to sprint from 0-100 km/h 0.3 seconds quicker in a claimed time of 3.3 seconds. The top speed limiter kicks in at 306 km/h.

Regarding the drive modes, they have all been re-engineered to allow drivers to select the perfect set-up for every environment. A new Rally mode makes a debut in the Urus Performante for those days on dirt tracks. Strange.

Handling prowess has been enhanced by lowering the chassis by 20 mm while also widening the tracks by 16 mm. The wheel arches, on the other hand, have been beefed up and now accommodate optional 23" or 22" wheels wrapped around exclusive Pirelli Trofeo R rubbers.

The Lamborghini Urus Performance features aerodynamic tweaks and carbon fibre elements such as bonnet air outlets forged from lightweight carbon fibre in body colour or partially visible carbon fibre as an option. Buyers can have an optional carbon fibre roof that references Lamborghini's Super Sports models such as the Huracán Performante and Super Trofeo.

The exterior is further equipped with a front bumper and splitter in carbon fibre with new lines, new black front air-intakes, a new air-curtain and a newly-designed rear spoiler that increases the rear downforce of the SUV by 38%.

Changes inside are subtle with Nero Cosmus black Alcantara as standard, but it's worth mentioning that there is a new hexagonal seat stitching design. The options include a leather treatment, dedicated colour and trim options which consist of an extension of the Performante trim on doors, roof-lining, seat backrest and rear wall.

As with the previous Urus, buyers can further customise their car via the Ad Personam customization program. It includes interior matt carbon fibre details, red door handles, and a customised kick plate with the Ad Personam insignia.

Lamborghini plans to deliver the Urus Performante to customers by the end of 2022.
