Audi's updated Q3 is a considerable step up from the previous model

The Audi Q3 has consistently had to prove itself against its rivals, including the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and the Volvo XC40, among others. Since the global debut of the first generation in 2011, the Q3 quietly began ticking every box in terms of design, comfort and performance.

Through the past two generations, it found its rhythm quickly, becoming a go-to for those who wanted compact luxury without compromise. Its sales speak for themselves. Audi reports that it has sold more than 2 million Q3s since its global launch. To put that into perspective, that’s around 11,500 Q3 models finding homes every single month since 2011.

Enter its third generation, which, at first glance, is a complete departure from what we are used to, thanks to an exterior look that resembles that of the latest Q5. Up front, there’s a wide single-frame grille and split digital matrix headlights. The rear features optional digital OLED rear lights, complemented by a continuous LED light strip and illuminated rings, marking the first time this feature has been introduced to the Q3.

It also returns with a bold new identity, one that seems like a complete departure from what we are used to. At first glance, it’s almost unrecognisable, reflecting the design cues of its larger sibling, the latest Q5, thanks to a wide single-frame grille upfront, flanked by split digital matrix headlights. The rear has been completely redesigned and comes with optional digital OLED rear lights that are connected by a sleek LED light strip that now includes illuminated rings for the first time in the Q3 family.

In terms of trims, the Q3 is available in various trims, including the Advanced and the sportier S Line, to cater to different personalities and lifestyles. It comes with a palette of eleven exterior colours and wheel sizes ranging from 17 to 20 inches. And for those who appreciate a cleaner, more aerodynamic aesthetic, there’s an option of specially designed wheels ranging from 18 to 19 inches.

The interior takes inspiration from the Q5 with an 11.9-inch instrument cluster and a free-standing 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. What’s impressive, though, is what Audi calls Softwrap, which means the interior design extends from the doors across the entire width of the dashboard to create a sense of space.

Other interior features include a new steering wheel control unit that creates more space, whereby the right-hand lever now acts as the gear selector while the one on the left manages the lights and wipers. It’s a setup that feels refreshingly uncluttered, something we’ve seen in some Mercedes-Benz models, and we’ll be honest, it works.

In terms of space, the new Q3 comes with a 488-litre boot space that can be further expanded to 575 litres by sliding the rear bench forward in an upright position. With all the seats folded flat, that expands to 1,386 litres.

In terms of engine options, we will have to wait for Audi SA to confirm the local line-up closer to launch. That said, overseas markets are already getting a wide range of options, including TFSI and TDI engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid model. The latter, with 200kW and 400Nm, is made possible by a 25.7kWh battery pack, which Audi claims has an EV range of up to 119km before the engine takes over propelling duties. That’s more than enough for most daily commutes.

Depending on the variant, the Q3 will come standard with Audi’s 7-speed S Tronic transmission, sending power to either the front wheels or all four through the brand’s quattro system, depending on the spec.

Expected to launch in SA in the third quarter of 2026, the new Q3 appears to be a big step up from the model it replaces. If Audi gets the pricing and positioning right, it could be a strong contender in the premium compact SUV segment and a real consideration for buyers looking for an alternative to the stalwarts.
