Opel Astra goes electric
There you have it, the Opel Astra is going electric. It joins the fray and follows a selection of electrified models offered by the Rüsselsheim-based marque for overseas markets as the brand transitions to a purely electric brand by 2028.
So far, overseas buyers can order 12 electrified Opel models, proving the brand's seriousness about a zero-emissions future. The Astra Electric is the latest model under the Opel banner to ditch a combustion engine for a wholly electrified powertrain.
To begin with, the new Astra Electric packs an electric motor that pumps out 115 kW of power and 270 Nm of torque, enough to accelerate the vehicle silently to a top speed of 170 km/h. Feeding the electric motor with power is a 54 kWh battery pack that ensures up to 416 km of pure electric driving range.
Owners can recharge the battery pack using a 100 kW DC fast charger which adds 80% of the battery capacity from 0% in 30 minutes. Besides that, it can be recharged at home via the standard 3-phase 11 kW onboard charger.
Based on the same platform that underpins other Opel ICE-powered cars, the Astra Electric looks nearly identical to its regular counterparts. Yet, it's worth mentioning that it comes with 18" alloy wheels in a diamond-cut or completely black finish.
The interior features ergonomic Active Sports seats, which can be wrapped optionally in Alcantara. According to Opel, the seats have been certified by Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. Campaign for Healthier Backs.
There is also a fully-digital Pure Panel with two large 10" widescreen displays, a large E-HUD head-up display and natural voice recognition. Regarding safety, the Astra Electric is fitted with numerous assistance systems as a package of the new Intelli-Drive 2.0 and adaptive Intelli-Lux LED Pixel Light.
As mentioned earlier, Opel is going fully electric by 2028, and only time will tell if this is earmarked for local introduction since the current generation isn't sold locally.
