Nissan Micra returns as a funky-looking EV

Nissan's future may not look so bright as the brand undergoes a major overhaul as part of its recovery strategy, but it seems to have a plan. Part of its strategy is to accelerate a push into electric vehicles (EVs), with the recently announced Micra playing a significant role.

Speaking of the new Micra, it reappeared after being discontinued in SA in 2022, concluding its 18-year presence in the South African market that began with the third-generation K12 model in 2004. At the time, the decision was part of the brand's 'Nissan Next' plan, which aimed to focus on rationalising the product lineup, resulting in the introduction of the Magnite in South Africa.

Being a fully electric model, the new Micra is now built on the AmpR Small platform that also underpins models like the Renault 5 E-Tech and will be available in two battery options: 40kWh and 52kWh with electric ranges of up to 308km and 407km, depending on the model.

The new Micra still sticks to its ethos of being a stylish B-segment hatchback. What’s cool is how it blends those familiar Micra characteristics with a retro twist, especially those circular headlights and taillights, which are our absolute favourites. It’s when you look closely, and you can’t help but spot a little bit of the Fiat e-500 influence at the front end… or maybe that’s just us. Either way, the design feels fresh and a little heritage-inspired. In terms of wheel options, all trim levels will come with 18-inch wheels with three different options depending on the spec specified: Active, Icon or Sport.

Inside, the Micra has a minimal approach thanks to a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster that is paired with a touchscreen infotainment system of the same size. A nice touch is the moulded outline of Japan’s Mount Fuji into the storage space between the front seats, as well as the fact that the front and rear seat upholstery can be specified in three choices: Modern, Audacious, and Chill. Brilliant touch.

Nissan’s keeping it simple with the new Micra with only a 5-door configuration for the entire range. Boot space sits at 326 litres, which is a fraction less than the Magnite’s 336 litres. Still, it’s more than enough for daily errands, a grocery run, or even a weekend getaway if you pack smart.

When it comes to recharging the battery packs, the Micra accepts up to 100kW DC charging or 80kW on the lesser model with a 40kWh battery pack. The DC charger can charge the pack from 15% to 80% in 30 minutes. Nissan says that both battery packs now come standard with a heat pump and a heating and cooling system. Also, the Micra comes with V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) technology to allow users to power external appliances. Not really a foreign concept, but especially handy when the power’s out or you’re off the grid on a camping trip.

The new Nissan Micra is expected to arrive in Europe before the end of the year. And honestly, despite everything that the Nissan brand is going through at the moment, it’s reassuring to see it going the extra mile to create something fresh and forward-thinking like the Micra EV. It honestly feels like a significant step in the right direction.
