While Mercedes-Benz has committed to launching more than ten fully-electric vehicles under the EQ brand by 2025, the electric fold has now gained its newest member: the EQS SUV.

Not to be confused with the EQS which is the S-Class’ silent partner, the EQS SUV shares its 3,210 mm wheelbase with the aforementioned sedan but sits 20 cm higher. It measures 5,125 mm in length, 1,959 mm in width and 1,718 mm in height.

To get the numbers out of the way, the new Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV debuts in three trims; EQS 450+, EQS 450 4Matic and EQS 580 4Matic.

The new EQS 450+ is fitted with a single-electric motor that sends 265 kW and 568 Nm to the rear wheels while the 4Matic variant raises the torque figures to 800 Nm. The range-topping EQS 580 4Matic gets electric dual-motors that gush out 400 kW and 858 Nm that is channelled to both axles.

The trio is powered by a 107.8 kWh battery pack and is good for 600 km worth of driving range according to WLTP standards.  Power for all trim levels comes from a 107.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery mounted in the floor.

Getting the battery packs recharged using a 110 kW DC fast charger allows for 10-80% in a matter of 31 minutes, while a 10-100% time will take 11 hours and 15 minutes when using a 240-volt wall box. The new EQS SUV is capable of 200 kW charging speeds.

The new Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV comes with three-row of seats with the second row offering electronic adjustments fore and aft by up to 130 mm as standard. The boot space is measured at 645 litres and can be expanded to up to 880-litres, folding down both rear rows further expands it to 2,100 litres.

Mercedes-Benz offers a third row of seats with two additional individual seats as an option.

The interior of the EQS SUV isn’t short of style, thanks to a portrait 12.8” touchscreen display that is offered as standard in the base variant. An MBUX Hyperscreen, 12.3” instrument panel and a touchscreen of the same size can be specified as options in the 450 and come standard on the 580 – Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard across the entire range.

Outside, the EQS SUV follows the same design language worn by other EQ models within the Stuttgart-based automaker’s fold. There is a ‘Black Panel’ unit, headlights that are linked by a light strip and a deep black radiator grille.

The front end further features three light dots as seen in the EQS sedan while the rear is bolstered with a structured surface of the light modules illuminated from behind. The EQS SUV comes standard with LED high-performance headlights and if you want something special, Digital Light with a light band can be fitted as special equipment.

The EQS SUV features black wheel arch claddings and side sill panels as well as an optional running board. Flush door handles are standard while a panoramic sunroof is available as an option.

The fully-electric SUV sits on wheels that measure 20” to 22” with the latter exclusively available for the EQS SUV in high-sheen finish and multi-coat black/high-gloss paint.

We expect the new Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV to hit the market before the end of the year as a 2023 model.
