Original Batmobile auctioned off
There’s a child living in each one of us, one that doesn’t let go of the hope that maybe someday we’ll morph into a crime fighting action hero. Equipped with an alter-ego costume, armed with cunning weaponry and, best of all, parked in our secret garage would be a sleek fighter-car used to dash to and from a crime scene.
Batman enthusiast Rick Champagne realised his childhood dream when he bought the original Batmobile for a whopping R38 million at the Barrett-Jackson classic car auction on Saturday in Arizona.
First used in the 1960s iconic TV series ‘Batman’ the Lincoln Futura was fitted with futuristic gadgets by Hollywood car custom designer George Barris. On the show, the Batmobile sported lasers, oil-slicks as well as a Batphone – long before cars even had phones.
Despite the high price tag, the Batmobile offers supercool street-cred and action hero status. After all, if you had the money, wouldn’t you want to own this piece of history?
