Lamborghini man to help Tata

13 December, 2013 | by Lance Branquinho

When you’ve traced such evocative shapes such as the Lamborghini Miura, Countach and Lancia Stratos, whatever does one do for a career encore?

Well, you consult to Tata. That’s right, Marcello Gandini, the man who’s hand shaped some of the most striking supercars in history, has been busy trying to help Tata make a super-Nano.

You might think this a rather odd state of affairs, but Tata’s Nano city car has failed abysmally in its sales targets, and we all know that if your model-line isn’t selling well, you need a mini-supercar version of it, as a halo model.

This is of course where Gandini enters the fray. This super-Nano is powered by a 1-litre engine said to be good for 70kW and features a composite body which has been rather awkwardly shaped, especially the rear glasshouse. And those spherical wheels? Very strange indeed.

Tata won’t state its intention with this Nano design study by Ghandini, but somehow we suspect any production version will be noticeably, well, less mini-Countach in appearance.

Truth be told, we respect their ambition.
