New Merc CLA launched in S.A.
Mercedes-Benz’s wooing of the younger market with money to burn continues unabated with the South African launch of the CLA, a brand new four-door coupe that follow hot on the heals of the A-Class hatchback. Merc have made no bones about it that they’re gunning for a market younger than the one that’s currently buying their C-Class.
It’s a handsome car that borrows it’s design from the CLS and it’s mechanics and four-cylinder mechanics and turbocharged engines from the A-Class. The South African line-up consists of four models, starting with the CLA 180 at R348 000 and topping out with the pocket-rocket CLA 45 AMG at an eye-watering R674 000.
Sandwiched in the middle is the CLA 200 at R372 000 and the one diesel in the line-up, the CLA 220 CDI at R397 000. TopGear always recommends the all-wheel drive AMG, and with 265kW and 450Nm on tap, it’s certainly no slouch. If you use the launch control, it will run from 0 to 100kph in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250kph.
