Marshal dies after F1 accident
Montreal – An F1 marshal lost his life on Sunday following an accident at the Canadian Grand Prix. He was hit by a recovery vehicle while helping to remove Esteban Gutierrez’s idle Sauber from the side of the track.
The 38-year-old victim, who has not yet been named, was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he died due to sustained injuries. He was the first marshal to die at a Formula One race since the Australian Grand Prix back in 2001.
Messages of condolences came streaming in since news of the tragedy broke. Among those to pay tribute to the marshal was race winner Sebastian Vettel who posted the following statement on his website: “I am very, very sad to hear this news and my thoughts are with his family and friends”.
