Maria Sharapova is the new face of Porsche

Tennis sensation Maria Sharapova has been chosen as the brand ambassador of Porsche, and has just signed a three-year deal with the luxury automaker. A first for the German company who have never before awarded someone with the official title.

Earlier this year the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists named the Porsche Boxster as the 2013 South African car of the year.

“Her profile and charisma are an ideal fit for Porsche. She is also highly respected around the world and enjoys an outstanding reputation,” says Matthias Mueller, CEO of Porsche AG.

Porsche are yet to announce what exactly Sharapova will be doing in her new role, though the sports car maker has stated that a new advertising campaign was on the cards.

Naming Sharapova as the new face of Porsche comes as a surprise, as the brand is usually marketed as masculine and brute.  The tennis idol however places it in a different light, targeting a more youthful and diverse audience.

Seen as no stranger to the role, in 2006 the 26 year old Russian athlete was awarded a similar deal with Land Rover. What do you think of Porsche’s decision? Is Sharapova aptly suited for the role?
