Lexus ES to undercut IS in SA
You want value? Well, Lexus is going to give you luxury value, with its new ES250.
Not au fait with the ES designation? Well, it has been the brand’s sales hero since 1989 and the sixth-generation ES will be available in South Africa by November. Should you be excited? Hhmmm…
Like most Lexus (models) the ES250 is as lavishly equipped as one would expect: powered/heated seats, rear-view camera or keyless entry. Cheaper than IS, with GS-type cabin dimensions, it is an awful lot of car for the money.
Not nearly as striking a car as the latest IS (especially rolling those undersized 17-inch alloys), ES250 is very much old-school Lexus values with contemporary engineering.
Powering the ES250 is a 135kW/235Nm 2.5-litre petrol, although those potential customers madly keen on Lexus hybridization will have option on special order purchasing of the ES300h, which adds a 105kW battery motor to the 2.5-litre petrol engine.
Okay, let us be honest: it is not pretty. But it is massive inside and you just know it will never go wrong. Oddly FWD, though.
Pricing? Well, Lexus will only reveal Rand numbers at the Johannesburg International motor show in two weeks time, but they’ve said it will be sub-IS, though, so expect ES250 won’t be more than R450k, by our calculations.
