John Lennon’s Ferrari 330 GT Sold
She’s got a ticket to ride, in one of the most sort after items in motoring history: John Lennon’s 1965 Ferrari 330 GT. This sky blue coupe, the first-ever car Lennon owned, was recently auctioned-off at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England, for a cool R5.5 million – double the price event organizers initially expected.
Meanwhile the car’s new owner, who wished to remain anonymous, set a world auction record by paying the highest-ever amount for a Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Coupé.
Some say the day Lennon passed his drivers license, luxury car dealers raced to his house with a range of exotic cars, hoping the young star would buy one. In the end Lennon went with the Ferrari, which at the time set him back around R100 000.
This limited four-seater sports a V12 engine and matching blue interior. Ironically the car was purchased the same month the Beetles recorded their smash hit “Ticket to Ride” – could the Ferrari above have anything to do with that? Possibly not, but just imagine how phenomenal this car would be if that was the case.
