British ace Lewis Hamilton has smashed reigning F1 champ Sebastian Vettel’s track time on TopGear by over a second tallying a time of 1 minute 42.9 seconds.

The 2008 world champion beat the German in a ‘reasonably priced’ Suzuki Liana. This was Hamilton’s second appearance on the show after racing in wet conditions six years ago to set a time of 1 minute 44.7 seconds.

Hamilton later admitted, ‘I’m really surprised. I was going to be disappointed in myself if I didn’t do a competitive time.’

Though the risk-taking Brit may have beat Vettel this time, he’ll have a much bigger challenge ahead trying to repeat his victory against the Red Bull driver in the upcoming F1 season. Hamilton will begin the season in a new car with new team following a much-criticized move from McLaren to Mercedes.

Though he played down intentions of challenging the leading teams when the season kicks off in Australia on March 17, he said that the move to Mercedes was inevitable because a change was needed.

Either way the stage is set. No doubt Hamilton will walk away with an unsettled grin on his face. How does this win affect confidence levels of both drivers?
