Could Kia be going topless?

21 June, 2013 | by Benedict Pather

It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard rumours about Kia creating a drop-top. In fact it’s been so long that by now, it’s almost unimaginable.

However, one should never underestimate the Korean carmakers – who are quickly gaining consumer confidence in South Africa. Perhaps not as much as they’d like, but confidence none the less.

Then out of nowhere this appears. A phantom-like image recently emerged from www.kia-world.net, claiming to be an exclusive drawing of the Kia Pro cee’d GT Cabrio. Suddenly the future looks bright.

We however won’t jump to conclusions until an official press released is sent to our inbox. Still, one can’t help but admit, this is a pretty accurate illustration of what a topless version of their three-door hatchback would look like. Agreed?

For now however we’ll believe it when we see it. Simply, because Kia’s chief designer Peter Schreyer, who by the way designed the Audi TT, has been dropping hints since the Geneva auto show way back in 2007 about doing a Kia soft-top. Remember the ex_cee’d concept? We thought as much.

Fast forward to 2013 and we’re sure you’ll agree five years has been more than enough time for them to proceed, and if anything, drop the suspense.  If the reveal day comes rather soon; don’t be surprised if that illusion soon becomes a reality.

Question is: will a soft-top Kia have sufficient cachet to woo potential cabrio buyers?
